As more members express their interest, NUP finds itself in a delicate position, having to carefully manage its selection process for flag bearers to avoid internal divisions.

The race for political positions in Uganda is intensifying, with a growing number of candidates, particularly within the National Unity Platform (NUP), vying for various seats ahead of the 2026 elections.

As more members express their interest, NUP finds itself in a delicate position, having to carefully manage its selection process for flag bearers to avoid internal divisions.

While the party awaits guidance from its executive committee on how to proceed with selecting candidates, political analysts are urging NUP to hold primaries.

This, they argue, could help ensure a fair process but also presents the risk of alienating members who may be unhappy with the outcomes, potentially sowing division within the party.

The Kawempe Mayoral race has become a focal point for local politicians, with several high-profile NUP members now entering the fray.

One of the key contenders is Magala Umar, a former Kawempe North parliamentary candidate who was previously rejected by NUP.

He has shifted his sights to the mayoral race, believing that the time has come for fresh leadership in the area.

Magala, in an interview, expressed his belief that Kawempe needs new, youthful leadership to usher in a new era.

"The current leadership has been in place for a long time, and it's time for change," he said, emphasizing the need for revitalization in the municipality.

On the other hand, former Kawempe North MP Alhaj Latif Ssebaggala has also announced his candidacy for the mayoral race, citing the strong support of his former constituents.

"My supporters have called for my return, and I am answering that call," Ssebaggala stated, reinforcing his belief that his previous tenure has made him the ideal candidate for the role.

However, the incumbent mayor, Emmanuel Sserunjoji, remains steadfast in his bid for re-election.

Confident in his record, Sserunjoji dismissed his rivals, asserting that his accomplishments speak for themselves.

"I have worked hard for the people of Kawempe, and I believe my track record will speak for me. I am asking the people for one more term to finish what I started," he said.

He also hinted at helping to identify his successor once his term concludes.

As the three contenders prepare for the race, the NUP is yet to finalize its process for selecting candidates for the 2026 elections.

The uncertainty surrounding the flag-bearer selection has raised concerns about potential internal conflict, especially with so many high-profile figures now involved in the race.

NUP's Selection Process Under Scrutiny

NUP Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya has made it clear that any member who challenges the party’s decision-making process risks expulsion.

"We will not tolerate any actions that undermine the party's unity. Those who challenge our decisions will be expelled," Rubongoya stated, reinforcing the party's commitment to maintaining discipline and unity.

However, political analyst Professor Rogers Barigayomye has urged NUP to consider holding primaries in order to select the best candidates for the 2026 elections.

"Primaries would ensure a more democratic and inclusive selection process, giving party members a voice in choosing their leaders," Barigayomye explained.

While primaries might be a positive step for inclusivity, Barigayomye also warned of the potential for division.

"The risk, of course, is that members who are not selected may feel alienated, leading to internal factions and divisions within the party. NUP must be cautious in balancing fairness with unity," he cautioned.

As NUP approaches the 2026 elections, its decision on how to select flag bearers will be crucial in shaping the party's future.

The choices made will not only impact the party’s unity but also its chances in the upcoming election.

All eyes are now on NUP, with the party's executive committee expected to issue guidelines soon on how it will move forward in the selection of candidates for the next election cycle.
