Ssekikubo wants House recalled to settle corruption storm

Two National Resistance Movement (NRM) legislators Theodore Ssekikubo of Lwemiyaga county and Barnabas Tinkasiimire of Buyaga county want Parliament recalled from recess with immediate effect.

According to the MPs the recall of parliament should respond to allegations of corruption and abuse of office that have been unearthed on social media.

They argued that the times have made it hard to identify themselves as Members of parliament as they look ugly to the public.

“We can’t now walk with our heads high on the streets of Kampala, we smuggle ourselves and bold out," Ssekikubo said.

"Isn’t now the best time to be identified as MPs? We are all bundled up, nobody is giving answers, should we all go by roll call, not me, not me? We are all being castigated and we look bad in the eyes of the public."

Ssekikubo also revealed that following allegations made in public that the members of the Parliamentary Commission distributed amongst themselves funds in the name of Service Awards, some Commissioners have gone into hiding

“Even the Commissioners themselves are in hiding. We are here, we are loitering around corridors of Parliament, we can’t see anybody," he said.

"These are very disturbing issues and we are calling on the Speaker, Deputy Speaker and the Clerk to live up to their calling to restore Parliament. Parliament is being run down.”

In a press conference held at Parliament, Ssekikubo added that a plenary session that was slated for Tuesday was unceremoniously called of without giving an explanation something he says is strange.

"We received a notice from the Clerk to Parliament, Adolf Mwesige informing MPs of a plenary sitting, however, the meeting was unceremoniously called off through an order from Prime Minister, stopping the plenary sitting," he added.

“With those rundown allegations which we can’t find reasons and answers to and if indeed there is no ground, why doesn’t someone come out and issue a statement and I have two options that I can give the Speaker, let her immediately reconvene Parliament, let a statement be issued, let it be debated because parliament can only act when Parliament is sitting,” Ssekikubo

In a new development, the speaker of parliament Anita Annet Among held a meeting with President Museveni last evening at state lodge Nakasero however, the content of the meeting has not been disclosed.
