The Democratic Party (DP) leadership in Nakaseke District has officially entered into a political alliance with the Democratic Front (DF), a new opposition platform led by former Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga.

The partnership was sealed through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the DF headquarters in Namirembe, in a move both parties described as a commitment to “unity over confusion” as the country heads toward the 2026 general elections.

Joseph Kinobe Nviri, chairperson of DP in Nakaseke, led the delegation clad in the party’s signature green shirt.

He said the decision followed deep internal discontent within DP, particularly after the party's recent delegates’ conference in Mbarara.

“We discovered during the Mbarara conference that we no longer have active leadership in the party. What’s left is hope. We are ready to support the most credible and promising leadership between DP and DF,” Kinobe said.

The new alliance is expected to bolster DF’s grassroots mobilisation in central Uganda, especially in Buganda region where both parties have historical ties.

Welcoming the Nakaseke DP faction, Mpuuga said the agreement marked a new chapter in efforts to restore political confidence among voters who feel betrayed by traditional parties.

“Voters in Buganda have been confused for too long. This agreement is one of the ways we can reclaim our political strength and revive hope,” Mpuuga said.

He stressed that Uganda needs a clear shift from stagnation to visionary leadership, noting that strategic alliances are key to building a broad-based movement for national renewal.

“It is no longer about waiting; it is about taking responsibility and guiding the country forward,” he stated.

Mpuuga also called on disillusioned political actors, especially those who once belonged to legacy parties like DP, to “return home and reclaim their space” in the struggle for a better Uganda.

He said the pain of past elections particularly among youth and elders must serve as a wake-up call to opposition forces to unite around shared values and a common national agenda.
