Mother-daughter duo nabbed for attempting to steal day-old baby
Asiimwe and Naluyange are accused of attempting to steal a baby from Masaka Regional Referral hospital

A mother, Zainab Asiimwe, aged 45, and her 16-year-old daughter, Aisha Naluyange, residents of Kayirikitti village in Nyendo-Mukungwe division, have been apprehended for allegedly stealing a one-day-old baby from Masaka Regional Referral Hospital.

The incident unfolded as one Mbabazi Charity, the mother of the child, entrusted her new-born to Naluyange while she and her husband went to purchase clothes for the infant.

Upon their return, Naluyange informed them that the baby had been taken to the nursery for oxygen due to breathing difficulties. However, the mother suspected something was amiss, and asked the nurses on duty for permission to see her baby.

“They allowed me to enter the nursery, only to check and my baby was not there. So, I asked Naluyange to show me the doctor who had taken the baby to the nursery, but she claimed she could not remember who it was,” Mbabazi narrated.

Lulaga Vicent, the baby's father, immediately started searching outside the maternity ward and saw Zainab Asiimwe rushing to get a boda-boda to escape with the baby.

"After finding my wife screaming that the baby was stolen, I rushed out and saw Asiimwe with a baby. I told her, 'Isn’t that my child?' She said, 'No, you ask that one,' pointing to her daughter Naluyange,” Lulaga explained.

“I made alarm and police at the facility intervened at once, apprehending both Asiimwe and her daughter.”

This incident has left the community bewildered, raising concerns about the safety and security of new-borns in healthcare facilities.

The arrested duo now faces legal consequences for their alleged crime. Authorities are delving into the details of the case to establish a motive and ensure justice prevails.

"As we speak, investigations have commenced, and the child is together with the parents. Asiimwe Zainab and her daughter Naluyange Aisha are going to be charged with stealing a child," stated Tusingiro Richard, the crime investigation officer at Masaka Central Police Station.

Naluyange and her mother, currently held at Masaka police station, have declined to comment on the charges against them.
