The President of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu, has urged Ugandans to shift their focus from President Yoweri Museveni’s eventual exit to preparing for the country’s future beyond his regime.
Speaking during an appearance on NBS Television’s Morning Breeze program, Muntu said the conversation should no longer revolve around Museveni’s departure, but instead on the kind of Uganda citizens want to build.
“President Museveni is already gone. He is done,” Muntu stated. “We, as leaders and citizens, need to start focusing on what kind of transition we want and what kind of country we want to create after him.”
He cautioned that removing an autocratic leader does not automatically guarantee progress. Uganda’s more than 60 years of independence, he argued, have shown that simply changing leaders without a structured vision or transition plan does not ensure national development or good governance.
The former army commander, who served as the country’s top military officer between 1989 and 1998, emphasized the need for the opposition and civil society to engage in meaningful discussions about institutional rebuilding, strengthening the rule of law, and fostering unity and inclusivity.
According to Muntu, the future of Uganda lies not in the fall of one man but in the rise of a new, people-centered political order.
“Unless we begin to plan now, we will lose more time,” he warned.
