Ugandans remain divided over the growing trend of men using makeup and other beauty products to improve their appearance.
While some people support the practice, arguing that men also deserve to take care of their looks, others believe that excessive grooming among men crosses cultural boundaries.
However, skincare experts say it is normal for men to groom themselves, as long as they do not overdo it.
In the past, a man who had money rarely paid attention to his physical appearance. But times have changed.
Today, having money alone is no longer considered enough, and many men now see personal grooming as an important part of their lives, with some even turning to makeup.
According to dermatologist Dr Umar Musinguzi of Alma Dermatology Clinic, the purpose of makeup for men is not the same as it is for women.
He explains that most men who use makeup do so mainly to cover areas on their bodies or faces that they feel are not appealing.
Dr Musinguzi adds that a person’s appearance plays a significant role in how they are perceived by others, regardless of gender.
This, he says, is why many men today care less about criticism from society as long as they look good.
However, he cautions that although everyone has the freedom to groom themselves as they wish, men should avoid excessive makeup that drastically alters their appearance.
He also warns that, just like in women, excessive use of cosmetic products among men can lead to skin complications. As a result, men are advised to be cautious about the products they apply to their skin.
Some men who spoke to us said it still feels awkward to be seen wearing makeup, and many of them prefer focusing on working hard and earning a living instead.
Meanwhile, several women support the idea of men taking care of their appearance, arguing that a man who looks untidy or unattractive does not make a good impression in society.
