Under the shimmering chandeliers of the Kampala Serena Hotel, women in heels took centre stage Friday night as Johnnie Walker marked the first anniversary of its “She Walks” initiative — a celebration of purpose, leadership, and the power of women walking boldly into spaces once closed to them.
Dubbed “Purposeful Strides: Scaling Hills in Heels,” the event attracted high-level leaders, creatives, professionals, and changemakers who gathered to honour the strides women have made across boardrooms, industries, and communities.
It was more than a corporate gathering — it was a toast to transformation and a night of affirming presence, power, and pride.
“This evening isn’t just about reflection,” said Andrew Kilonzo, Managing Director of Uganda Breweries Limited.
“It’s about recognising how far we’ve come, and recommitting ourselves to walking forward together with purpose and pride.”
Launched in 2024, the She Walks campaign has grown into a continent-wide movement, supporting women to rise and lead with confidence.
In Uganda, the anniversary celebration was charged with emotion, inspiration, and a sense of mission.
Among the evening’s keynote speakers was Lynda Biribonwa, Chairperson of the Petroleum Authority of Uganda.
“There is nothing I love like seeing women thrive in spaces we were never expected to occupy,” she said.
“When I decided to return to Uganda, many thought it was a risk. But I knew I had more to give. I didn’t just climb the ladder — I built new rungs for others.”
Biribonwa urged women to mentor, to lead without apology, and to walk in purpose even when the road gets steep.
“Leadership is not about fitting in. It’s about standing firmly in your purpose… Let us keep walking, with heels if we must, but never without purpose.”
Johnnie Walker Uganda’s Brand Manager, Christine Kyokunda, reinforced the brand’s commitment to the movement.
“She Walks began as a bold idea to celebrate and elevate women making purposeful strides, and today, it has grown into a powerful movement. From golf courses to boardrooms, we are walking alongside women as they rise, lead, and inspire the next generation.”
The night closed with a performance from Solome and The Band, wrapping the evening in soulful elegance as guests raised their glasses one last time — a toast to women who walk tall, lead boldly, and light the way for others to follow.
