Police in Kiboga District have arrested seven people for allegedly participating in an unlawful political assembly on Wednesday night.
The arrests occurred at around 11:00 p.m. in Chibiga Village, Chibiga Parish, Chibiga Sub-county, following reports of an ongoing campaign meeting held in violation of Electoral Commission (EC) guidelines.
According to police, the operation was conducted after the District Police Commander (DPC) received information that a political gathering was taking place beyond the designated campaign hours.
Upon arrival, security officers reportedly found a group of people gathered around a campaign van belonging to Hon. Christine Nachimuero, the incumbent Woman Member of Parliament for Kiboga District, who is seeking re-election on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket.
“When our team arrived at the scene, many people fled, but we managed to arrest seven individuals who were in possession of campaign materials,” said SSP Lameck Kigozi, the Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson. “The suspects and the campaign van were taken to Kiboga Police Station for further investigations.”
The suspects currently in custody have been identified as Kikomeko Siliman, Muhwezi Joseph, Kayuki Alex, Katende Amidu, Semanda Joseph, Sebulime Abdu, and Nanono Justine.
Police have preferred charges of attending an unlawful assembly against the group. The case has been forwarded to the Resident State Attorney (RSA) for sanctioning, and the suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
“We expect the suspects to be produced in court, possibly by tomorrow morning,” Kigozi noted. “We want to remind all political aspirants and their supporters to strictly adhere to the Electoral Commission’s campaign guidelines.”
The police spokesperson emphasized that night campaigning is illegal, warning that law enforcement will not tolerate any violations.
“Campaigning at night is outlawed,” Kigozi stressed. “We shall not allow it anywhere in the Wamala region. The guidelines exist to ensure order, security, and fairness during the election period, and police will do whatever it takes to enforce them.”
Police have urged all political actors to respect the law and conduct their campaign activities within the prescribed hours to avoid conflict with authorities.
