In a major step towards achieving Kenya’s clean energy goals, President William Ruto reiterated the country’s commitment to realising a 100% clean energy grid by 2030.

Working closely with the private sector, Kenya is harnessing its geothermal potential, positioning itself as a leader in renewable energy in Africa.

The President highlighted the flagship 105MW Menengai geothermal project, which is expected to elevate Kenya’s global ranking to 5th in geothermal energy production.

This development is a testament to the country’s strategic focus on clean energy, as President Ruto emphasised, "This project is proof that economic growth and clean energy development can go hand in hand."

Recently, President Ruto broke ground on the 35MW Orpower 22 Geothermal Plant in Menengai, Nakuru County. The plant, operated by Ormat Technologies, represents a crucial addition to Kenya’s energy mix, helping reduce the nation’s reliance on fossil fuels while supplying clean, reliable energy to homes and industries.

Another key development was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Kenya Electricity Generation Company (KenGen) and Kaishan Group, a global green technology company.

This partnership will focus on the development of green ammonia, a sustainable solution with potential applications in energy storage and agriculture. Green ammonia can help reduce carbon emissions, further advancing Kenya’s climate goals.

Kenya’s clean energy efforts are well-aligned with global trends, and the geothermal projects signify the country's leadership in renewable energy in Africa.

These public-private collaborations highlight the government’s commitment to balancing environmental sustainability with economic growth, while opening up numerous opportunities for investment and innovation in the renewable energy sector.
