In the picturesque hills of Kigezi, a buzz of excitement filled the air as the inspector General of Police (IGP) tournament has officially been launched.
The event has brought together police officers and six police teams from across the six districts that formulate the Kigezi -sub-region.
The launching ceremony held at Kabale Main stadium, attended by high-ranking police officials, local leaders and enthusiastic supporters, aims at promoting unity, teamwork and sportsmanship amongst the law enforcement community.
Ibrahim Saiga the Kigezi Regional Commander (RPC) notes that the purpose of the IGP tournament is to know the task a head of police since they are heading to a period of politics adding that its important that they secure the situation stressing that they have to get to the period of elections when they are physically fit as well as the mind being at rest.
“It’s not only today that police is playing football but police has been participating in different tournaments and through this tournament we are in position to identify talent," he said.
When asked on police protecting land grabbers who in return take public sports land, Saiga responded saying that it’s a misconception stressing that the its their mandate as police to keep law and order in public.
The Kigezi police spokesperson Elly Maate highlighted that this is the first of its kind for the police force to have the tournament adding that they have embraced it .
Maate added that this will help them in working closely together with the public.
Shk.Kasiimu Kamugisha the Deputy RDC Wakiso who was also the guest of honor at the launch of the tournament appreciated the IGP for initiating the tournament at regional level stating that it brings together police officers together as well as enhancing coordination in the police operations.
He added that the IGP is also bringing back morals and life back to the men in uniform to ensure that they active during the police operations.
“Such tournaments will bring together men in uniform together with the community as well as creating a bond that will make it easier for police to work with the community," he said.
The IGP tournament is a two-day tournament.
Currently six police teams are at Kabale main stadium showcasing their football skills.
The competition is fierce with each determined to emerge victorious and claim the coveted IGP trophy.
