Fishermen have blamed local authorities, particularly the police and anti-illegal fishing task force, for failing to provide adequate security.

“We’ve been crying out to the police about theft and insecurity for months, but we’re always told there’s no fuel or manpower,” said one distressed fisherman.

“Now, it has cost lives.”

The growing insecurity is forcing some fishermen to reconsider their livelihoods.

“It’s better to return to the village than risk being killed,” one resident remarked.

Local leaders have also joined the call for urgent intervention. Ssalongo Joseph Kimera, a local councillor, condemned the rising criminal activity and demanded immediate action.

“The theft was bad enough, but now lives are being lost. This must stop,” he said.

Deo Nsamba, mayor of Kasensero Town Council, emphasized the broader impact on the community.

“Fishermen are losing not just their equipment but also their livelihoods. The government must prioritize their safety to prevent the collapse of this vital trade,” Nsamba said.

Masaka regional police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye confirmed the murders and announced an active investigation.

"We have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators. We are committed to bringing them to justice and uncovering the motive behind this heinous act,” he stated.

The tragedy has reignited demands for stronger security measures at Kasensero Landing Site.

Residents have called for increased police patrols, better resources for law enforcement, and additional personnel to combat the escalating threat.

As the community mourns the loss of two lives, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for improved security to protect the livelihoods and safety of those who depend on the lake.
