A fierce blaze ravaged a timber shop on Spire Road in Jinja City  Sunday Night, reducing the establishment to ashes and causing significant loss to timber traders, carpenters and furniture dealers.

The fire, which erupted around midnight at Tabliq garage was first noticed by a nearby security guard who immediately alerted the fire department.

Firefighters arrived promptly but faced immense challenges due to the highly flammable nature of the stored timber and inaccessibility of the timber shop.

Despite their valiant efforts, it took nearly four hours to bring the fire under control. The inferno’s intense heat and towering flames illuminated the night sky, drawing onlookers from nearby neighbourhoods.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic and frightening. "I woke up to loud cracking sounds and saw flames engulfing the shop," said Sarah Nalule, a resident who lives close to the scene. "It was terrifying to watch. We feared the fire might spread to other buildings."

Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries. However, the extend of damage is huge and many people have lost their source of livelihood.

"My business was worth Shs 7Million but all my furniture have been burnt" said Betty Nakato one of the affected furniture dealers.

Majority of the affected traders are calling for support from government.

Initial investigations suggest that the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault, though a detailed inquiry is ongoing.

Kiira region Police spokesperson James Mubi is urging other business owners in the area to review their electrical installations and adhere to fire safety regulations to prevent such incidents in the future.

Locals have expressed their concern due to investors who are blocking the access ways (alleys)

Godfrey Kabi a timber dealer says he watched in disbelief as Police firefighters couldnot access the scene because the only alley which the rescue team could was blocked.

"Fire and rescue services vehicle tried to access this timber shop from behind but, the alley was blocked and there is an investor who blocked the access way and worst of all put a gate which is under lock and key"  Kabi said

A similar concern was raised by Kiira region Police spokesperson James Mubi who said they have severally engaged City leadership over the blocked access ways but their pleas have not yielded results.

The fire has sparked discussions among Jinja City residents about the adequacy of fire safety protocols and the need for regular inspections, especially in businesses dealing with flammable materials.
