The Principal Judge, Jane Frances Abodo, has underscored Uganda’s preparedness ahead of the country’s participation in the 35th Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, scheduled to take place from June 1 to 5, 2026, in Vienna, Austria.
Lady Justice Abodo made the remarks while chairing a preparatory meeting held at the Supreme Court Building in Kampala, bringing together representatives from key justice administration institutions to review Uganda’s readiness for the international conference.
In her opening remarks, she commended the institutions represented for their continued commitment as preparations for the session entered the final stages.
Lady Justice Abodo noted that although the Judiciary would not physically attend the conference, the participating institutions would adequately represent Uganda and advance the country’s position during the session.
“I’ve asked the Deputy DPP, John Baptist Asiimwe, to become the Head of Delegation to lead this team to Vienna for the five days, represent Uganda at the UN Congress, and bring everybody back safely,” she said.
She added that as preparations move into the final phase, future engagements would be conducted virtually to allow quicker and more frequent coordination among participating institutions.
Lady Justice Abodo explained that the meeting had been convened to review three draft statements prepared for presentation during the session, including a general country statement and two thematic statements focusing on areas of interest to Uganda.
As preparations progress, she proposed that the Head of Delegation would take charge of convening subsequent meetings, while she would continue participating as a member of the team.
The meeting was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, forensic experts, and other stakeholders in the justice sector.
The 35th Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice is expected to provide a platform for member states to discuss global priorities in crime prevention, criminal justice, and international cooperation.
