My name is Steven Kalema, a student from Victoria University-Kampala, a rugby player from Heathens RFC of Kyadondo Ruby club and my story is one of resilience, determination and transformation. From humble beginnings as a car washer to becoming a promising rugby star and an internee at one of Uganda’s leading media houses, I have navigated a path filled with challenges and opportunities that have shaped who I am today.

Before my academic pursuits, I worked as a car washer locally known as “Kannabe’ in down coin, Chatta and Future Holdings car bonds to support ourselves with my brother.

This was right after I had finished my form six. My sister who was paying my fees since day one, had no money for me to continue up to the university.

My niece too was still in her early classes. The days were long and arduous, but I never let go of my dreams. School and Rugby, were all what I always loved. If I wasn’t at school, I was at Kyadondo Rugby club playing rugby.

Life took an unexpected turn when the land we were staying on in Naguru was sold. My sister moved to Kasangati and my brother and I had to find a new rental in Kireka.

Working together as Kannabe, in a Pakistani company, we shared everything, from rent besides solutions for our problems since we almost had the same problems. After two years, my brother moved in with his partner, leaving me to find a small rental in Mbuya ghetto.

I took a loan from my boss to cover the start-up rent. Living alone was tough. I managed everything on my own but found solace in training and occasional visits from friends. Despite the challenges, I kept praying for a better situation, hoping for a brighter future.

The turning point came when I received an opportunity for a rugby scholarship at Victoria University. This was a life-changing moment, but it came with a difficult decision.

I had to choose between working and going back to school again. I discussed it with my friends and family and all had different solutions. "It was not easy to leave work, knowing the financial implications for myself," I recall. "But I knew that this scholarship was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that could change my future.

" I had to think carefully about my situation and decided to confide in my uncle. With no stable place to stay when I start my studies, I reached out to him Uncle for help''. l added.

He listened to my concerns and inquired about how I planned to manage basic needs. My primary request was simply to stay at his house. Fortunately, he agreed and I am currently living in one of his rental properties in Naguru-go Down with his 14-year-old son while continuing with my internship at Next Media.

Enrolling at Victoria University was just the beginning. I quickly proved my mettle on the rugby field, joining the Victoria University's rugby team.

However the demands of a rigorous academic schedule, with the physical and mental challenges of competitive rugby is no small feat. Rugby has taught me discipline, teamwork and resilience. These qualities have been invaluable not just on the field, but also in my studies and now during my internship.

Currently, I am interning at Next Media in the Operations Department under the quality control system. This role is an extension of my commitment to excellence. Working in the Operations Department, I have gained hands-on experience in various aspects of media operations.

Next Media has provided me with a platform to apply my academic knowledge in a real-world setting. The experience is incredibly enriching and has broadened my understanding of media operations and quality control.

Balancing my internship and rugby commitments is challenging, but I remain undeterred. My daily routine involves early morning personal trainings, followed by a full day at Next Media, and then personal evening study sessions.

This demanding schedule has taught me the importance of time management and prioritization. My experience as a rugby player has helped me develop a strong work ethic and the ability to stay focused under pressure. These skills are crucial in managing my responsibilities as an intern and a student.

My journey is far from over. With my internship providing a solid foundation in media operations and my rugby career continuing to thrive, I am poised for a bright future.

My story is a source of inspiration for many, demonstrating that with determination and hard work, it is possible to overcome challenges and achieve one’s dreams. I want to inspire others who are in difficult situations to never give up on their dreams.

Opportunities may come when you least expect them, and it's important to be ready to seize them.

For those interested in learning more about my journey to pursue their own dreams, my story is a powerful reminder that the path to success is often paved with perseverance, courage and the willingness to take bold steps toward a brighter future.
