KAMPALA — The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has expressed grief following a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two staff members and left several others injured while returning from official duty in Arua.
According to an official statement issued by the tax authority, the deceased have been identified as Robert Lumanyika Wamala and Moses Adola, who died in the crash that occurred on Sunday, May 24, 2026, along the Kampala–West Nile highway.
“The accident occurred at about 8pm as the team travelled back to Kampala from official duty in Arua; their vehicle reportedly collided with a crossing elephant,” URA said in its statement.
Four other staff members sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical care under close monitoring.
The Commissioner General of URA, John Musinguzi Rujoki, visited the injured staffers admitted at C-Care Hospital in Kisugu, formerly International Hospital Kampala, to check on their condition.
URA extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, loved ones and the entire URA fraternity during this difficult time. We pray for a quick recovery for the injured and may the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace,” the statement read.
Police confirmed that a third victim, whose identity was not immediately released, is a staff member of the National Curriculum Development Centre.
Traffic and Road Safety Directorate spokesperson Michael Kananura said the crash involved a Toyota Hiace, registration number UA 20121AA, which was carrying seven URA officials.
“Three (03) people died and four (04) others sustained injuries following a fatal road crash involving motor vehicle registration number UA 20121AA (Toyota Hiace) and a crossing elephant,” Kananura said.
He added that preliminary findings indicate the vehicle struck a crossing elephant before the driver lost control.
“The crash occurred on the night of 24th May 2026 at approximately 8:00 p.m. along the Arua road within Murchison Falls National Park in Nwoya District,” he said.
The injured were first taken to Kiryandongo Hospital before being transferred to Kampala for further treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Anaka Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examinations.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution when driving through wildlife-protected areas, especially at night, and to observe speed limits.
