Preparations are nearing completion for the 58th coronation and 15th recognition anniversaries of the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu Kingdom, set to take place on October 19.
This will mark the second coronation anniversary since the release of King Charles Wesley Mumbere from incarceration, adding significance to the celebration for the Rwenzururu community.
King Mumbere was crowned 58 years ago but the Rwenzururu kingdom was only officially recognised by the government 15 years ago.
This year’s event, under the theme, "Unity and Peace Building for Tourism Development," underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to fostering harmony and promoting tourism as a catalyst for economic growth in the Rwenzori region.
Geoffrey Kanyonyi, the kingdom’s spokesperson, revealed that Shs500 million is needed to organise the event.
However, with only six days remaining, the kingdom has raised just 60% of the required funds, leaving a considerable financial gap.
"We are hopeful that contributions from well-wishers, businesses, and government officials will help us close this gap. Every contribution, no matter how small, will help make this event a success," Kanyonyi noted.
As the kingdom prepares for this historic occasion, there is optimism that President Kaguta Museveni, who is expected to be the chief guest, will fulfill several pledges made to the Rwenzururu Kingdom.
The pledges include constructing a new palace, building a home for King Mumbere, and supporting Kingdom business enterprises.
"These projects are vital for our development and for strengthening the Kingdom’s role in the socio-economic transformation of the region," Kanyonyi added.
Thousands of people from the Rwenzori region and beyond are expected to attend, including government dignitaries, cultural leaders, and tourists.
The focus on unity and peace-building aligns with the Kingdom’s efforts to promote the region as a peaceful and attractive destination for tourism.
While the kingdom continues to seek additional funds, there is great excitement and anticipation for the event, which will serve as a testament to the resilience and cultural pride of the Rwenzururu people.
This year’s celebrations will also highlight King Mumbere’s enduring leadership and the Kingdom’s contributions to national development.
