My fight is against corruption not the Speaker- Ssenyonyi
The Leader of the Opposition (LOP) Joel Ssenyonyi has made it clear that his primary battle is against corruption and bad governance, not individual leaders, including the Speaker of Parliament.
In a candid revelation, Ssenyonyi disclosed that shortly after assuming office, he held a private meeting with the Speaker to discuss his concerns, but his focus has always been on holding the government accountable, regardless of who is involved.

"My problem is not with individuals, but with bad governance and corruption," Ssenyonyi stated.
"My responsibility is to tackle everything in Parliament, and even if the Speaker is involved in corruption, I will not shy away from addressing it." He added.
Ssenyonyi’s remarks come amidst a wave of criticism from some quarters, who have questioned his interactions with high ranking officials, including the Speaker. However, the LOP has been unwavering in his stance, emphasizing that his role is to play oversight and keep the government in check, without fear or favor.
Early Engagement with the Speaker
Reflecting on his early days in office, Ssenyonyi recounted his private meeting with the Speaker, where he raised several issues, including the controversial regional parliamentary sittings.
Despite writing several letters seeking responses on various governance issues, Ssenyonyi revealed that his efforts were met with silence.
"I did write several letters about the regional sitting of parliament ing Gulu city and didn’t get a response about it," he said, expressing frustration over the lack of communication. "When I am speaking about corruption and fighting it, it’s my job. The role of the LOP is to play oversight and keep the government in check."
Ssenyonyi’s disclosure sheds light on the behind the scenes challenges faced by the opposition in their quest to hold the ruling government accountable.
His statements suggest that despite private engagements and formal communication efforts, the opposition often encounters resistance or indifference from those in power.
Commitment to Oversight
As the LOP, Ssenyonyi has made it clear that his commitment to oversight and accountability is unwavering. His recent comments serve as a reminder that his fight against corruption is not about personal vendettas but about ensuring that Uganda’s governance is transparent and just.
"The job of the LOP is not to make friends, but to safeguard the interests of the people by ensuring that those in power are held accountable," Ssenyonyi asserted. "Even if it means confronting the Speaker or any other high-ranking official, I will do what is necessary to fight corruption."
Ssenyonyi’s strong stance is likely to resonate with many Ugandans who have grown increasingly frustrated with reports of corruption and governance failures.
His willingness to challenge even the highest offices in the land underscores his dedication to his role and the principles he stands for.
A Call for Accountability
As Uganda continues to grapple with issues of corruption and governance, Ssenyonyi’s remarks highlight the critical role of the opposition in ensuring accountability.
His call for more effective communication and transparency from government officials, including the Speaker, serves as a challenge to those in power to uphold the values of good governance.
Ssenyonyi’s message is clear, the fight against corruption is a collective responsibility, and as the Leader of the Opposition, he is committed to leading that charge, no matter the obstacles.
In a political landscape often marked by division and controversy, Ssenyonyi’s recent statements reaffirm his commitment to integrity and accountability.
As he continues to navigate the challenges of his role, his focus remains on the bigger picture ensuring that Uganda’s government serves its people with transparency and honesty.
Whether or not his efforts will lead to tangible change remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Ssenyonyi is not backing down from the fight.
