KYENJOJO| President Museveni has unveiled a comprehensive 10-point investment plan that is primed to bolster the tourism sector and increase foreign exchange earnings.
The plan, announced during the commemoration of World Wildlife Day in Kyenjojo District, underscores the government's commitment to harnessing the country's rich wildlife and natural resources.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, speaking on behalf of President Museveni, emphasised the importance of prioritising tourist protection, enhancing support services, and developing critical infrastructure such as roads and aerodromes.
Additionally, there will be a strong emphasis on enforcing the use of information and communication technology (ICT) to streamline operations within the tourism sector.
"Uganda's abundant wildlife, both flora, and fauna, serve as the cornerstone of our tourism industry, contributing over 90% of our tourism revenue," Nabbanja said.
President Museveni further committed to upgrading lesser-known game reserves to national parks, thereby expanding the country's tourism product offerings and attracting more visitors.
However, the government's ambitious plans come amidst financial challenges within the tourism ministry, which have hindered certain development initiatives.
Doreen Katusiime, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, highlighted these financial gaps and stressed the need for additional support.
"Tourism is termed as Uganda’s cash cow and contributes 3.8 percent of the national budget," noted Finance minister Matia Kasaija.
In response to the sector's importance, Kasaija pledged to enhance the tourism sector's budget allocation to facilitate its growth and development.
With concerted efforts and increased financial support, Uganda aims to capitalize on its natural beauty and cultural heritage to drive economic growth and prosperity.
