The completion of Kabalega International Airport in Hoima District is now at 95%, with its official commissioning scheduled for September 2025.

This airport, a crucial infrastructure project for Uganda’s oil and gas sector, is expected to facilitate the transportation of equipment needed to meet Uganda's 2025 oil production target.

State Minister for Transport Fred Byamukama, alongside representatives from the Civil Aviation Authority, the Ministry of Works, and SBI International, provided an update on the project’s progress.

Byamukama confirmed that out of the total project cost of 1.188 trillion shillings, the government has spent 1.08 trillion shillings so far.

Despite delays caused by changes in design, increased raw material costs, and the COVID-19 pandemic, he assured that the remaining work would be completed on schedule.

“The project stands at 95%, with only a few elements, including power and water extensions, remaining,” said Byamukama.

“We faced challenges, but the contractor is now progressing well, and we are confident the airport will be commissioned in September 2025."

The government also confirmed that test flights have successfully passed international standards, ensuring the airport’s readiness.

Additionally, the first phase of the airport will be followed by the procurement process for the passenger terminal, which is expected to begin six months later.

Byamukama highlighted that 90% of the workers on the project are Ugandans, with the government planning to further train and equip more nationals for future airport construction projects.

As the last 5% of the work progresses, the Ministry is recruiting staff, with some workers being transferred from Entebbe Airport to Kabalega to ensure smooth operations once the airport opens.
