Lydia Nakazibwe Elected as Kampala University Masaka Guild President
Nakazibwe secured a decisive victory with 302 votes, defeating her opponent, Charity Barigye, who garnered 126 votes.
In a highly contested by-election, Lydia Nakazibwe, a diploma student in teaching, has been declared the new Guild President of Kampala University, Masaka Branch.
Nakazibwe secured a decisive victory with 302 votes, defeating her opponent, Charity Barigye, who garnered 126 votes.
The election, held on September 15, 2024, at the university’s New Kkumbu campus, witnessed a significant turnout.
In her victory speech, Nakazibwe expressed her commitment to serving her fellow students and vowed to prioritize their concerns during her one-year tenure.
“I am deeply honored by the trust you have placed in me. My leadership will focus on addressing the issues that matter most to us as students, from academics to our welfare,” she stated.
She also called for an end to political unrest and urged students to unite for the betterment of the university community.
Nakazibwe's win comes amid growing frustration among students regarding the administration's handling of student affairs, particularly concerning security during elections.
Many students are advocating for reforms to ensure future elections are conducted peacefully and without external interference.
The university administration has yet to comment on these concerns, but many students remain hopeful that Nakazibwe’s leadership will usher in positive changes for the student body during her term as Guild President.
