MAYUGE | At least four members of the same family were shot dead and five others critically injured in Nawanvubu village, Buwaaya sub-county, Mayuge District.

Witnesses say the gunman walked into the home of Isaac Isabirye Mudhasi, 42, who was found eviscerating chicken for a visitor and opened fire on the family members.

According to Mirabu Namukose, who had visited, Mudhasi and two of his daughters Elesi Kafuko, 15, Resty Kantono, 13, and Nicholus Mudhasi, 6, were killed on the spot, while his wife and four other family members sustained serious injuries.

The gunman, whose identity has not yet been established, spared only a visitor who was at the scene.

The attack is alleged to be linked to a long-standing land dispute that has been ongoing.

The Local Council II chairperson, Mr Nasib Babisenani, said there has been contestation over land for a stretch of time and resolved.

"The deceased has been having differences over land, we intervened and hoped that we had resolved it but it's a said if the same has sparked off the murder," Babisenani said.

Police are investigating the motive behind the attack.

The team led by District Police Commander, Agnes Aanyu, visited the scene with the kennel unit to gather evidence.

Neighbours and friends described the deceased as a peaceful and hardworking man who was loved by everyone.

"He was a good man who never had any conflicts with anyone," said a neighbour. "We are still trying to come to terms with what happened."

The injured are receiving treatment at Mulago Hospital, where they are fighting for their lives.

The bodies of the deceased have been taken to Mayuge Health Centre IV mortuary, awaiting post-mortem examination.

Police are urging anyone with information about the attack to come forward to help with the investigation.

The incident has raised concerns about the escalating violence, and residents are calling for greater security measures to be put in place to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
