Huawei, Butaleja Leaders Inspect Smart Village Project Progress

District leaders in Butaleja, alongside officials from Huawei, have inspected ongoing works in Nawanjofu Sub-county, where solar energy and internet infrastructure are being installed as part of the Smart Village project.
The inspection team included Resident District Commissioner (RDC) David Kulaba Isabirye, District Chairperson Michael Higenyi Bore, Bunyole West MP Geoffrey Mutiwa, and District Engineer Aggrey Higenyi, among others.
Fauzia Mukyala Sooma, Huawei’s public relations officer, reported that the project in Buhadyo village is 65% complete.
She expressed confidence that the remaining work would be finished soon, with plans for President Museveni to officially launch the initiative in April.
Under the project, Huawei is installing solar power in 25 homes, as well as in Buhadyo Primary School and Madungha Health Centre II.
Additionally, the company is constructing a telecom mast to improve network coverage and providing free internet access for the community.
Mukyala also revealed that one classroom at Buhadyo Primary School will be transformed into a smart classroom, equipped with internet and free Wi-Fi to enhance learning.
Edgar Waiswa, the site engineer for Huawei in Nawanjofu, stated that the solar energy provided to residents is 30 kilovolts, equivalent to UMEME’s supply, with 120 panels installed to benefit at least 150 people.
He added that they are assessing coverage from nearby telecom masts to prevent interference, with the potential to extend the service up to eight kilometers.
MP Geoffrey Mutiwa welcomed the Smart Village project, saying the voltage capacity suggests the energy supply could also support surrounding areas in need.
He also endorsed Huawei’s proposal to conduct public training on internet usage, particularly social media, stressing the need to curb its misuse among youth.
LCV Chairperson Michael Higenyi Bore noted that Nawanjofu has long lacked critical infrastructure and emphasised that technological advancements would boost the local economy.
RDC David Kulaba Isabirye assured that police will be deployed to guard the solar equipment in Buhadyo, given its high value.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Butaleja’s political leaders while respecting the Local Government Act’s provisions on minimal interference in their work.
As the project nears completion, leaders and residents alike anticipate significant improvements in connectivity and access to modern services in Nawanjofu Sub-county.
