Father of Nine Dreams of Becoming National Long-Distance Runner
Lokut's passion for running led him to leave the police service and train alongside elite athletes in Kapchorwa

Mark Lokut Oyee, a 35-year-old father of nine from Nachuka Village, Nawanatau Parish, Loputuk Subcounty in Moroto District, remains determined to achieve his dream of becoming a national long-distance runner despite numerous challenges.

In 2010, Lokut travelled to Kapchorwa, where he joined the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) and served for five years.

However, his passion for running led him to leave the police service and train alongside elite athletes in Kapchorwa.

His aspirations suffered a major setback when their coach was arrested, forcing him to abandon training.

"I had to return home to take care of my family," Lokut recalls.

After returning to his village, Lokut spent the next decade supporting his community, particularly by reporting individuals in possession of illegal firearms. But in 2021, he reignited his ambition to become a professional runner.

"I am seeking support from well-wishers to help me achieve my dream of becoming a national athlete. I believe I still have the strength and endurance to compete at the highest level, and I want to prove my potential to the world," Lokut says.

Currently, he trains rigorously, running a 25-kilometer route three times a week from Moroto Town through Nadiket, Nawanatau, and Nadunget before returning to Moroto.

Despite the obstacles, he remains hopeful that his perseverance and dedication will earn him national recognition.
