The State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang, has reaffirmed his commitment to identifying and nurturing raw football and other games talent in Uganda. Speaking during an inter-subcounty football tournament in Katakwi, Ogwang highlighted the positive impact of such engagements, particularly in reducing drug abuse among the youth.

The tournament, aimed at showcasing young footballers, has attracted scouts from top-tier clubs like KCCA FC and SC Villa, among others who are on the ground to assess potential future stars.

Ogwang emphasised that talent identification is a crucial step in strengthening the country’s football structures and ensuring Uganda remains competitive on the regional and international stage.

"We have seen a significant drop in drug abuse among the youth because of their involvement in sports. This tournament is not just about competition but also about shaping the future of our young athletes," Ogwang noted.

To motivate teams, Ogwang rewarded the top performers with cash prizes, with the winning team receiving Shs 2 million, the first runner-up Shs 1 million, and the second runner and all teams who participated received Shs 500,000.

The initiative aligns with Uganda's broader goal of developing grassroots sports and providing talented youth with pathways to professional football.

With premier league scouts actively searching for talent, the competition offers a unique opportunity for young players in Katakwi to secure spots in top clubs.

Ogwang reiterated his ministry’s commitment to supporting such initiatives across the country, ensuring that raw talent is not only identified but also given the necessary support to thrive in national and international competitions.
