According to the Rwenzori Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Vincent Twesigye, the incident stemmed from a reported case of domestic violence at the deceased’s home on December 27, 2025.

Police said the complaint was recorded at Nyabbani Police Post under SD Ref: 05/28/12/2025, after which two officers were dispatched to effect the arrest.

The officers involved were No. 43911 Cpl Kimanywenda Jocus and No. 80311 Pc Tumuhirwe Issa, who were armed with an AK47 rifle, registration number UG POL 56324272–17442.

SP Twesigye said the officers found Bagubwa at a bar in Rwenkubebe Trading Centre, where he was arrested and handcuffed without incident.

“After arresting him, the officers escorted the suspect towards his home, where a boda boda rider had been arranged to transport him. However, the suspect refused to board the motorcycle,” he said.

Police allege that as the officers attempted to proceed, three of the deceased’s sons arrived at the scene armed with hoes and pangas and attacked the officers.

“One of the sons, identified as Ronald Atwebembere, allegedly cut Cpl Jocus Kimanywenda on the head with a panga, leaving her seriously injured,” SP Twesigye said.

During the ensuing scuffle, the deceased is said to have attempted to grab the firearm from Pc Tumuhirwe Issa.

“In the struggle, shots were fired, and the bullets fatally injured the suspect,” SP Twesigye said, adding that the three sons fled the scene following the shooting.

A team of police officers, including homicide detectives, scene of crime officers, criminal intelligence personnel and uniformed officers, later visited the scene under the leadership of the Officer in Charge of Nyabbani Police Station, ASP Alex Nuwamanya.

Police recovered the AK47 rifle with nine rounds of ammunition, as well as eight spent cartridge shells from the scene. Blood samples were also swabbed from the scene and from the body.

The deceased’s body was found lying in a pool of blood along the road near his home, with multiple gunshot wounds on the chest, hands, thighs, legs and lower abdominal area.

The body was conveyed to Ntara Health Centre IV mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Meanwhile, Cpl Kimanywenda Jocus was admitted to Ntara Health Centre IV in critical condition. Police said efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest the suspects who attacked the officers.

“Inquiries into the matter are still ongoing, and police are hunting for the suspects who assaulted our officers,” SP Twesigye said.

Police have appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate with investigations as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
