Government has officially launched the Shs 37.5 billion Kayunga–Ssenge–Kawanda Road project in Wakiso District, with leaders cautioning the public to remain vigilant as construction begins.
Speaking at the launch, Ademachu Monica warned that road construction zones pose heightened risks to pedestrians, students, and motorists.
“We appeal to all road users, especially students and pedestrians who are more vulnerable, to be very careful while using roads that are still under construction,” she said. “This will help to avoid accidents and other challenges that come with unfinished roads.”
The 6.5-kilometre road project, funded jointly by the World Bank Group and the Government of Uganda, falls under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme aimed at improving mobility and easing congestion.
Construction will be undertaken by Bouch Uganda Ltd in partnership with Nyoro Construction, with completion expected within 18 months.
The works will include upgrading the road to tarmac standard, widening the carriageway, improving drainage systems to address flooding, and installing road safety features such as signage, speed calming measures, and pedestrian walkways.
Local residents welcomed the development, citing years of poor road conditions marked by dust, potholes, congestion, and flooding.
Wakiso District Chairperson Matiya Lwanga Bwanika urged contractors to prioritize quality and timely delivery, while also creating employment opportunities for local communities.
“We ask the contractors to ensure that the work is done carefully and to the required standards so that the road lasts longer,” he said.
Leaders also called on the public to cooperate with contractors, observe traffic guidelines, and remain patient throughout the construction period.
Road safety remains a pressing concern, with data from the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report indicating over 20,000 road crashes annually, resulting in more than 4,000 deaths—many occurring on busy or poorly maintained roads, including construction zones.
Once completed, the Kayunga–Ssenge–Kawanda Road is expected to improve connectivity, reduce travel time, and boost trade and access to essential services across Wakiso District and surrounding areas.
