Rwanda partners with CRBC to launch Africa’s first self-flying taxi

The Government of Rwanda has partnered with the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and EHang Holdings Limited, a global leader in urban air mobility technology to debut Africa’s first-ever passenger electric air taxi flight, marking a new era for aviation innovation on the continent.

The groundbreaking flight, featuring the EH216-S electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, took off on Thursday in Kigali during the opening of the 9th Aviation Africa Summit and Exhibition, which runs from September 4–5.

“This milestone showcases Rwanda’s ambition to lead in aviation innovation and shape the future of advanced mobility,” RwandAir announced on its official X handle formerly known as Twitter

The fully electric, self-flying aircraft,often referred to as an air taxi, can take off and land vertically, offering a glimpse into a future of cleaner and more efficient urban transport solutions.

With over 2,000 delegates in attendance, the two-day summit features advanced air mobility showcases, actionable discussions, and industry collaborations aimed at building a sustainable aviation future for Africa.

“From leading the world in drone delivery to now welcoming air taxis, Rwanda is shaping the future of flight,” RwandAir posted, underscoring the country’s leadership in aviation innovation.

Industry experts see this as a turning point for African aviation, positioning Kigali as a hub for advanced, environmentally friendly air transport technologies.
