Elephant kills one, leaves another critically injured in Abim
Unpredictable and a deadly

The community is demanding action from the Uganda Wildlife Authority to prevent further tragedies.

Tragedy struck last night in Abim District when an elephant attacked and trampled two individuals, leaving one dead and the other critically injured.

The incident occurred at around 10pm on May 12 as Denis Ongok, 23, and Godfrey Okello were riding a motorcycle from Abim Town Council to Alerek Town Council.

Ongok succumbed to his injuries, while Okello remains in critical condition at Abim Hospital.

This attack is the latest in a series of wildlife-related incidents in Abim, with residents expressing frustration and fear.

In January 2024, Amunyo Longoli narrowly escaped death after being attacked by a buffalo, which left him with severe injuries.

"Despite reports to Kidepo National Park, no action has been taken to address the issue." Alerek Subcounty chairman Emmanuel Owona said.

Residents are urging the government to intervene, as the attacks have not only resulted in human casualties but also caused significant damage to crops, making it impossible for residents to access their gardens during this planting season.

The recent attack comes just a week after another elephant attack in Loyoro Subcounty, Kaabong District, which claimed the life of Walter Ngiro.

The community is demanding action from the Uganda Wildlife Authority to prevent further tragedies.

"We have lost enough lives and livelihoods. It's time for the authorities to take responsibility and protect us from these wild animals," said Paul Lokubal, a resident of Kaabong.
