National Unity Platform (NUP) lawyer and Kira Municipality Member of Parliament–elect George Musisi has emphasized that while dialogue among political actors is necessary, it must be grounded in truth, justice, and genuine reconciliation to be meaningful.
Speaking on Next Big Talk hosted by Canary Mugume on Next Radio on Saturday, Musisi stressed that engagement among political forces should not be symbolic or superficial but should address the country’s pressing challenges.
“It’s true that dialogue is important among political forces, but it has to be premised on truth, justice, and reconciliation,” he said.
Musisi’s comments come amid growing debate within opposition ranks after a high-level meeting between a section of opposition legislators and President Museveni at State House Entebbe last week.
The delegation, led by Mawokota South MP Yusuf Nsibambi, met the President on Thursday to discuss national stability and reconciliation following the January 2026 general elections, which were marked by heightened political tension.
In an exclusive NBS Television interview, Nsibambi said the talks focused on calming tempers and fostering unity after a highly charged electoral period.
“The meeting was about peace and reconciliation for the development and stability of the country, especially after the general elections that left some people’s tempers high,” he said.
Key issues discussed included political prisoners. Nsibambi revealed that the delegation appealed to President Museveni to consider pardons for hundreds of detainees linked to political activity.
The MPs also raised concerns over the continued incarceration of NUP Buganda Deputy President and Butambala County MP Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, calling for an independent and thorough investigation into his case.
Nsibambi’s decision to meet the President without broader opposition consultation drew criticism, but he defended his actions as independent and in the national interest.
“No one sent me to the opposition. I’m an elected MP, and I’ll engage with whoever I deem necessary for the good of my constituents and the country,” he said.
Other opposition legislators who attended the meeting included Okot Bitek (Kioga County, FDC), Robert Centenary (former Kasese Municipality MP and Deputy President of FDC Western), Moses Kabusu (Kyamuswa County, PFF), Roland Ndyomugyenyi (Rukiga County), Fred Kayondo (Mukono South, DP), Richard Lumu (Mityana South, DP), and Latif Ssebagala Ssengendo (former Kawempe North MP), among others.
