The National Unity Platform (NUP) has caused a political stir in Bukomansimbi North after dropping incumbent Member of Parliament Dr Christine Ndiwalana in favor of Nsereko Christopher Kayongo Engagga as its flag bearer for the 2026 general elections.
For many constituents, the announcement came as a surprise. Ndiwalana, who won the seat in 2021 riding the NUP wave, has consistently demonstrated loyalty to the party and its leadership.
Her sudden replacement has divided supporters and ignited debate over the party’s decision.
Ndiwalana’s political journey is closely tied to NUP. In 2021, she gained prominence by standing under the party ticket amid intense political pressure.
She often highlighted her sacrifices, loyalty to NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine), and resilience in the face of political challenges.
Critics, however, argue that her performance in Parliament fell short of expectations at the constituency level.
Some community voices contend that she was more visible in national politics than in local service, leaving gaps opponents could exploit. Others maintain that her representation gave Bukomansimbi a national voice.
Nsereko Christopher Kayongo Engagga, the new flag bearer, is not new to Bukomansimbi politics. Known for grassroots mobilization and strong connections with youth and farmers, Engagga has steadily built a base in the district.
Party insiders say his selection reflects NUP’s strategy to field candidates who can both win elections and maintain strong local engagement.
Supporters describe Engagga as a unifying figure with the ability to rally support across the constituency.
“He understands ordinary people’s struggles from agriculture to education and has been with us even outside campaign seasons,” they said.
The decision has left Bukomansimbi North sharply divided. Ndiwalana’s supporters argue that dropping her undermines party loyalty and disregards the sacrifices women make in politics.
“She has stood with the party through thick and thin. To drop her now is unfair,” said one loyalist.
Conversely, Engagga’s supporters welcome the move as an opportunity for fresh leadership. “Bukomansimbi needs someone who is accessible and close to the ground. Nsereko is the right choice for 2026,” they noted.
Analysts warn that if Ndiwalana chooses to run as an independent, the opposition vote could be split, potentially allowing the ruling NRM to reclaim the constituency.
For NUP, the decision highlights the challenge of balancing internal unity with electoral strategy.
As Bukomansimbi heads into a tense campaign season, the dropping of Ndiwalana marks a turning point in the constituency’s political narrative.
The outcome will test whether NUP consolidates its grip or opens the door for new challengers.
