Incumbent Ibanda District Chairperson, Happy Herbert Mayanja, has been overwhelmingly re-elected as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer in the recently concluded party primaries.
Mayanja secured a commanding 41,739 votes, representing 71.33% of the total votes cast, demonstrating his popularity and strong grassroots support across the district.
The results were officially announced by Ibanda District NRM Registrar Gloria Tushemereirwe during the tallying exercise held at the district NRM offices.
“He has won fairly and squarely, with a margin that reflects the confidence the people of Ibanda have in his leadership,” Tushemereirwe said.
Mayanja’s closest contender, Amon Mwijukye, garnered 9,129 votes (15.6%), followed by John Kapimpi Tushemereirwe with 4,616 votes (7.89%), and Garatian Muhumuza with 3,035 votes (5.19%).
Addressing jubilant supporters shortly after being declared the winner, Mayanja expressed gratitude for the renewed trust placed in him.
“I want to thank the people of Ibanda for standing with me once again. Your support means everything to me, and I pledge to continue serving you with dedication and integrity,” Mayanja said.
He also praised the NRM Electoral Commission for organizing a peaceful and transparent election process.
“This was a demonstration of internal democracy within our party. I applaud the NRM Electoral Commission for conducting a free and fair exercise,” he added.
Mayanja’s re-election sets the stage for his bid to retain the Ibanda LCV chairmanship in the upcoming general elections.
The Ibanda NRM primaries were conducted peacefully, with reports indicating high voter turnout across the district’s sub-counties.
