Former Minister, Dr.Mateke defies NRM, campaigns for independent candidate in Kisoro by-election
Dr. Philemon Mateke, the Kisoro District NRM chairperson, has taken a bold step by physically campaigning for the independent candidate, Grace Akifeza Ngabirano, in the Kisoro by-election.
This move comes after Akifeza lost the NRM party primaries to Rose Kabagyeni, who secured 39,941 votes.

Mateke’s decision to support an independent candidate over the NRM flag bearer is significant, especially considering his position within the party. It highlights the divisions within the NRM leadership in Kisoro.
While campaigning, Dr. Mateke openly stated that Akifeza’s votes were rigged during the party primaries.
He insisted on questioning on how the party primaries were handled, questioning if refugees, students and patients to vote.
Mateke said that unless the party top heads correct what went wrong in the party primaries, he is not ready to support the NRM flag bearer Rose Kabagyeni.
“We thank God that even after the death of passing away of my daughter Sarah Mateke, God got for us Akifeza who has strength and power to go into her position who can work with us. People got to know how Akifeza’s votes were stolen," Mateke said.
“Akifeza has strength, educated and she has a big mindset.”
Six candidates are vying for the Kisoro woman MP seat and these include: Grace Akifeza Ngabirano (Independent), Rose Kabagyeni (NRM), Salim Sultana (NUP), Juliet Musanase (FDC), Aisha Cyimpaye (PPP) and Mable Ingabire (UPC).
Kisoro will be going to polls on November 14,2024.
