In a surprise move, the Democratic Party's (DP) Kibinge Subcounty Chairperson in Bukomansimbi district, Deogratious Bwanika, has defected to the National Unity Platform (NUP), citing shared values with the party's president, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.
Bwanika, who announced his defection on Sunday , will lead the team responsible for registering NUP members in Bukomansimbi in the party's red book.
"My decision to join NUP is based on the party's commitment to fighting for the rights of the marginalized and oppressed," Bwanika said.
"Even before the 2021 general elections, I had declared Kyagulanyi Ssentamu as my president, and I'm proud to now be a part of his team."
Bwanika praised NUP's commitment to grassroots mobilization and its focus on empowering local communities.
"NUP's approach to politics resonates with my own values and vision for our people," he added.
The defection is seen as a significant blow to the DP in the district, as Bwanika was a key figure in the party's local leadership.
However, Bwanika downplayed any suggestions of a rift, saying, "My departure from DP is amicable, and I remain grateful for the experiences and lessons learned during my time in the party."
NUP officials led by the deputy “KUNGA” leaders in greater Masaka Charles Kirumira welcomed Bwanika's defection, hailing it as a testament to the party's growing appeal.
"We are excited to have Bwanika join our team," said Kirumira, the deputy KUNGA leader in Masaka.
"His experience and leadership skills will be invaluable in our mission to bring about positive change in Uganda."
The development is likely to shake up local politics, as NUP continues to gain momentum in the district.
