MTN supports 200 Kiteezi families after garbage tragedy
MTN Uganda donated Shs100 million in essential relief items to support 200 families affected by the Kiteezi landfill landslide in Wakiso District
MTN Uganda, in collaboration with MTN MoMo Uganda Ltd, has donated essential relief items worth Shs100 million.

The disaster has left hundreds of residents in dire need of assistance.
The relief package includes household items such as blankets, jerrycans, mosquito nets, and water purification tablets.
These essentials aim to help affected families regain some sense of normalcy during this difficult time.
The items are being distributed in partnership with the Uganda Red Cross Society and the Office of the Prime Minister.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Sylvia Mulinge, CEO of MTN Uganda, expressed the company’s commitment to supporting communities in crisis.
“Our hope is that these provisions will offer some comfort and support to the affected families,” Mulinge said.
She emphasized that everyone deserves the benefits of a modern life, including access to essential resources.
Mulinge also highlighted that this initiative is part of MTN Uganda’s Ambition 2025 strategy.
This strategy focuses on fostering resilience and providing critical support to communities in need.
The donation comes at a crucial time, as more than 30 people have tragically lost their lives in the landslide.
Recent updates reveal that dozens are hospitalized, and others are still missing.
Approximately 600 to 700 individuals have been affected, highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian assistance.
Robert Kwesiga, Secretary General of the Uganda Red Cross Society, expressed deep gratitude to MTN Uganda.
“We have always seen MTN come through to support, and they are often the first to respond,” Kwesiga remarked.
He praised MTN’s involvement in disaster relief efforts across Uganda, including during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pamela Komujuni, Senior Disaster Management Officer in the Office of the Prime Minister, also commended MTN’s efforts.
“Through the MTN Foundation, we have seen many lives touched,” Komujuni said.
She emphasized the importance of private sector involvement in humanitarian causes.
Komujuni noted that the government, in collaboration with the Uganda Red Cross, is committed to responding to such disasters.
She called on other corporate entities to follow MTN’s example in supporting Ugandans during times of need.
In her closing remarks, Mulinge reaffirmed MTN Uganda’s dedication to standing by the Ugandan people.
She stated that the company will continue to work with its partners to deliver relief aid and foster recovery.
Mulinge emphasized MTN Uganda’s long-standing commitment to community support, particularly during disasters.
