The Uganda Small Scale Industries Association (USSIA) has introduced a powerful new tool to the entrepreneurial toolkit: a mobile app designed to demystify business formalization.

This innovative app aims to empower start-ups with crucial insights into tax compliance, regulatory requirements, and market trends, making it easier than ever for entrepreneurs to transform their ideas into fully formalized businesses.

During the launch event, Veronica Namwenje, the Executive Secretary of USSIA, emphasized the transformative potential of this digital tool. "The USSIA Starters Platform App is designed to strengthen our entrepreneurs digitally," she said.

"By providing real-time updates on business information, and translating critical content into local languages, we are ensuring that every entrepreneur, regardless of their background, can access the knowledge they need to succeed."

Namwenje highlighted.

Formalization, which includes registering businesses, understanding tax obligations, and complying with regulations, is often a daunting task for start-ups.

The lack of formalization can limit access to financing, government support, and market opportunities, stifling growth. However, with the introduction of this app, entrepreneurs can now receive step-by-step guidance, making it easier for them to formalize their businesses and unlock new growth opportunities.

One of the standout features of the USSIA Starters Platform App is its ability to keep users informed with the latest business information.

As markets and regulations continue to change, staying updated is crucial for small businesses to remain competitive. The app promises to deliver timely updates, ensuring that entrepreneurs are always in the loop regarding any changes that could affect their operations.

Moreover, by offering translations in local languages, the app becomes more inclusive, catering to a broader audience that may not be fluent in English, the primary language of business in Uganda.

John Buyondo, a start-up entrepreneur and one of the early adopters of the app, expressed his enthusiasm for this digital innovation. "This app is a game-changer for us," he said. "As a small business owner, marketing our products effectively has always been a challenge.

With the USSIA app, I can now access marketing tips, connect with other entrepreneurs, and even understand how to comply with tax regulations all from my phone."

Buyondo’s sentiment echoes a broader trend where digital tools are becoming indispensable for business growth.

According to a report by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), mobile phone penetration in Uganda stands at over 70%, with a significant portion of the population using smartphones.

This widespread access to mobile technology creates a fertile ground for apps like the USSIA Starters Platform to thrive, offering entrepreneurs an accessible and convenient way to manage their businesses.

The introduction of the USSIA app also aligns with the broader push towards digital transformation in Uganda. The government has been promoting digital literacy and the adoption of technology across various sectors as part of its Vision 2040 agenda.

By embracing digital tools, small-scale industries can not only enhance their operational efficiency but also tap into new markets, both locally and internationally.
