With abundant deposits of gold, copper, cobalt, limestone, iron ore, rare earth elements, and graphite, the country is uniquely positioned to harness its natural wealth to accelerate economic growth and industrialization. The UCEM Mineral Conference, themed Unlocking Uganda’s Mineral Potential, speaks directly to the opportunities and responsibilities that lie ahead.
The Government of Uganda has committed to strengthening the policy and regulatory framework, particularly under the Mining and Minerals Act, 2022, to ensure transparency, accountability, and investor confidence. Coupled with infrastructure investments in energy, transport, and ICT, these reforms create an enabling environment for both local and international investors.
Value addition is central to Uganda’s strategy. By moving beyond raw exports to processing and manufacturing, the country aims to create jobs, enhance revenue, and build resilient supply chains that support domestic industries and regional trade. Furthermore, emphasis on skills development, artisanal and small-scale mining formalisation, and environmental stewardship ensures that growth in the mineral sector is both inclusive and sustainable.
