Eastern and Southern Africa Small Scale Farmers Forum (ESAFF) Uganda has taken a major step toward improving the country’s food and nutrition security by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Uganda Parliamentary Alliance on Food and Nutrition Security.

The agreement, signed by ESAFF Uganda National Coordinator Nancy Mugimba, aims to strengthen collaboration between small-scale farmers and Parliament by creating a platform that links farmers—particularly women, youth, and other marginalized groups—to parliamentary processes influencing agriculture, food production, and nutrition policies.

“This partnership is aimed at connecting small-scale farmers to Parliament so that their voices, especially those of women, youth and marginalized groups, can be heard in decision-making processes that affect food and nutrition security in Uganda,” Mugimba said.

Through the collaboration, ESAFF Uganda and the Parliamentary Alliance will work together on policy advocacy, research, and capacity-building programs that support sustainable agricultural practices.

“Together we will engage in advocacy for nutrition-sensitive policies, strengthen dialogue between small-scale farmers and Parliament, and work on research, policy reviews and joint resource mobilization,” Mugimba added.

The partnership will also focus on enhancing farmers’ skills in agroecology, climate resilience, and sustainable diets—approaches deemed critical in addressing food insecurity and the growing impacts of climate change on Uganda’s agriculture.

By fostering stronger cooperation between policymakers and farming communities, the initiative is expected to promote inclusive strategies that improve food production, nutrition outcomes, and sustainable livelihoods across the country.
