Phase II to Improve Healthcare Access and Quality in Karamoja Sub-Region

The Ministry of Health has officially launched Phase 2 of the Karamoja Infrastructure Development Project, with a €10 million contract awarded to contractors responsible for building and upgrading over 30 medical facilities throughout the Karamoja sub-region.
The initiative aims to enhance healthcare accessibility for local communities and bring vital medical services closer to the people.
This phase follows the success of the initial project, which laid the groundwork for healthcare improvements in the region.
Dr. Diana Atwine, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Health, presided over the contract handover ceremony and stressed the critical importance of quality work and strict adherence to deadlines.
“This project is crucial for improving healthcare in Karamoja, and we expect nothing less than excellence from the contractors,” Dr Atwine emphasized.
She also urged the contractors to complete the work on schedule and within budget, warning against any negligence.
The infrastructure upgrades will involve the construction of new medical facilities and the procurement of modern medical equipment to enhance healthcare delivery in the region.
These developments are particularly significant in Karamoja, where access to quality healthcare has been hindered by a shortage of medical facilities.
Dr. Atwine also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reducing health disparities across Uganda, stressing that the project is part of a broader initiative to provide equitable healthcare services to all citizens, especially those in underserved areas like Karamoja.
“This project will bring healthcare services closer to the people, improving access and quality of care,” she stated.
With Phase 2 now underway, the Ministry of Health is optimistic that it will substantially improve healthcare services in Karamoja and address the long-standing challenges faced by the local population.
The project is expected to make significant strides in increasing healthcare access and quality, ensuring better outcomes for the people of Karamoja.
