Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Finance has borrowed over 58 billion shillings from the Republic of China, money that is going to be used to acquire cargo scanning machines to be used by Uganda Revenue Authority (URA). The purchase is in line with President Museveni’s directive that he listed in his 10 points on restoring security in Uganda.
President Museveni noted that due to the inefficiency of the customs department many illegal products including guns are smuggled into the country. The scanners will help customs stop this.
While appending signatures on the document approving the 58 billion shillings loan, Finance minister Matia Kasaija said the machines should help the tax collectors become more efficient. the finance minister noted that help the tax collectors have efficient and ultimate tax collection in a centralized manna.
“We are going to acquire modernized systems with sufficient advanced technologies such as x-rays and CT scanners as well as a centralized management system “, said Matia Kasaija.
Government has also received a 589 millions shillings grant from the same Chinese government. The money is to support a preliminary feasibility study that will inform the main project which will be located in Rubonyi-Tororo in Eastern Uganda during the construction of the railway.
Kasaija explained that, “The funds are going to be used to construct buildings like classes, workshops and laboratories and these shall be used to train expects in maintaining and constructing of the railway.”
