The Anti-Corruption court yesterday charged two employees of the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) with soliciting a bribe at the Anti-corruption Court from a manager of herbal drinks firm, Mukama Nayamba.
The two suspects are Shaka Vitalias and Norman Mwamule, who are workers at the UNBS regional office in Mbarara.
The spokesperson CID, Charles Twiine, said last month, the suspects went to Mukama Nayamba processing factory in Sheema and demanded to inspect the factory.
Upon the completion of their inspection, Twiine said, they concluded that the factory had failed to measure to the standards and threatened to close it.
The suspects are said to have demanded Shs 10 million from the manager of the factory, who said he could only give them Shs 1 million.
Twiine said the two parties settled on Shs 6 million which was handed over to Shaka Vitalias.
After a week, the suspect allegedly came back and demanded more money to the dismay of the workers at Mukama Nayamba.
"On consultation with their boss, a position was reached that these people should be trapped and arrested. Indeed a Shs 3 million trap was set to which the suspects succumbed on 6/08/2020,"said Twiine in a statement.
He noted the suspects were then arrested, searched and found to be possession of the money, and detained at Sheema Police Station.
The suspects appeared yesterday before Justice Moses Nabende and were remanded until October 23.
