The Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, has said the institution had digitised most of the important documents including financial records among others.
Nawangwe's statement followed the tragic incident that took place at the University over the weekend where fire destroyed the main administration building including some records and property worth millions of shillings.
Nawangwe assured the public that most of the vital documents are safe.
"The fire at our main building was a very big tragedy. However, I would like to assure all our alumni, staff, students, and general public that all our records past and current, human resource, student, academic and financial records are all safely stored in digital form,"said Nawangwe.
Speaking to the media on Sunday, Nawangwe revealed the offices that have been affected by the fire outbreak are finance, human resource,audit and public relation office.
"We are determined to restore the building to the way it was, this is an iconic historic building known all over the world," said Nawangwe.
"It is a very sad day for Makerere, I think this is the worst disaster we have had in our entire 100-year history,"he added.
The Main Building with its unique 20th-century British architecture is easily Makerere’s most recognisable symbol and was constructed in 1941 with funds from the colonial development bourse.
