Sipapa saga: Police arrests over 20 NUP supporters for holding 'illegal' protest

Police in Kampala has arrested over 20 supporters of the National Unity Platform for allegedly holding an illegal demonstration demanding for immediate arrest of Charles Olima alias Sipapa.

According to the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, the National Unity Platform (People Power) supporters dressed in their red attire and led by Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu carried out a procession holding placards demanding for the arrest Sipapa.

Sipapa is accused of attempting to shoot supporters of NUP who had gathered at their offices in Kamwokya on September 15.

Onyango said the group blocked the Old Kira Road with logs, burning tyres blocking other road users.

"Over 20 people have been arrested for engaging in a demonstration. The suspects are being charged with holding an illegal procession,"said Onyango in a statement issued on Thursday.

He said the suspects' case files will be processed and submitted to Director of Public Prosecutions.

"All tyres used in the demonstration were picked from Nyanzi's building.Police has restored order in the area and business has returned to normal,"Onyango said.

He urged NUP supporters to appeal to institutions so that they can channel their grievances other than taking the law in their hands.
