Uganda’s long-distance runner, Joshua Cheptegei has broken the 10km road world record by setting a new time of 26 minutes and 38 seconds.
This was during the Marathon Valencia Trinidad Alfonso EDP on Sunday morning to break the previous record set by Kenya’s Leonard Komon set nine years ago in 2010.
“What a year it has been. I can’t believe it,” the 23-year-old said after completing a memorable 2019 treble.
“I knew that Valencia was going to be a really fast course, one of the fastest in the world. So to get to achieve what we came here for is something really special.
Cheptegei was earlier crowned the 10,000m world champion in Doha in October and in March had won the 10km cross country world title in Denmark.
The latest triumph sees the 23-year-old Ugandan complete a 2019 treble.
