Kanungu: Two kidnapped by Congolese militiamen; escape

The two residents of Kyabuyorwa in Butogota Town Council in Kanungu district who had been kidnapped by Congolese militiamen have escaped from their kidnappers.

According to the Kigezi sub-region police spokesperson, Elly Maate, Ambrose Twinamasiko, 27, and Elidard Twinomujuni, 31 had been kidnapped by men armed with two SMG rifles and pangas on Tuesday.

The kidnappers had emerged from a nearby bush before taking the duo with them and later crossed over to the side of the Democratic Republic of Congo jungles.

The victims had been kidnapped after a rope was tied across the road that trapped their victims who were travelling on a motorcycle.

Escape from kidnappers

However, according to Maate, the two victims later escaped from their kidnappers before being found by police.

The two victims namely Eldad Twinomujuni and Ambrose Twinamatsiko who were kidnapped in the night of 20/08/19 both of Butogota township Kanungu district have escaped from their kidnappers,”Maate told the Nile Post.

“Fortunately the two victims escaped into different direction from the kidnappers today the 20/08/19 at around 7am and have been got by police during a search at 18:00 hours.”

The region police mouthpiece said Twinomujuni was found at Kyeshero border point whereas Twinamatsiko was got at Kyabuyorwa short-cut to the DRC.

The duo told police that they had been taken to the DRC but could not identify any of their kidnappers.

A number of people have in the past months been kidnapped by militiamen who later escape to the nearby Democratic Republic of Congo with their victims and demand for ransom.

Two weeks ago, a man kidnapped at around 11 pm at Kanyashande cell, Kihembe parish, Kanyantorogo Sub County in Kanungu district when six men armed with an SMG rifle, a panga and spear kidnapped Elly Byarugaba a resident of Bushoro Cell in Kihembe parish.

“The victim was traveling on a motorcycle whose registration number is not yet established together with two other occupants namely when they were intercepted by the kidnappers using a rope they had tied on both sides of the road,” Elly Maate told this website.

On stopping, the victims were attacked by the group of armed men who kidnapped Byaruhanga but his colleagues survived narrowly.
