Makerere University’s St Augustine Catholic Chaplaincy claims that the person who broke into the chapel on the night August 11and made off with an unspecified amount of offertory collections, is not only known to the community but also knows the premises so well.
According to the chaplain, Fr. Josephat Ddungu, the way the thief ransacked the sacristy and how he went about with his job, shows he is very familiar with the place and the people there.
“We were able to see him on CCTV camera footage which is in circulating right now on different social media platforms. He looks familiar from the way he went around and seems to have knowledge of what he was doing or where we keep everything,” Fr Ddungu said.
He maintained that the police have been made aware and the community members alerted to identify the person in the video footage.
According to the footage and pictures seen by Nile Post, the thief went off with a number of items including; a laptop and a money collection bag for Radio Maria.
The thief also ransacked wardrobes in the sacristy but didn’t take vestments, he also broke into the choir wardrobe where he picked unidentified items.
This is not the first time that a robbery is being reported at this chaplaincy, in 2011, a suspected student made off with offertory bags during a Sunday collection.
