Kabaka Mutebi expresses need to revive cooperatives

The Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi has underscored the need to revive cooperatives among communities to boost their finances and fight poverty.

Kabaka noted that people are complaining of poverty and unemployment therefore there is need to resurrect investment groups and cooperatives so that the household incomes are improved.

He made the remarks during the 26th coronation anniversary celebrations held at the Nkumba University grounds in Wakiso.

The celebrations were attended by Sultan Muhammadu Abubakar Sa’ad of Sokoto from Nigeria as one of the invited guests.

Kabaka noted that Buganda has historically led the way when it comes to cooperative groups.

He said the revival of cooperatives and other investment groups is very important in boosting the household incomes and eradicating poverty among the people of Buganda.

“Our ancestors realised that working as a team would boost their finances for agricultural production," he said.

Kabaka also asked the clan heads (Abattaka) to focus on culture ,heritage as well as development among clan members as one of the means of restoring the glory of the Kingdom.

President Museveni congratulated the Kabaka and gave him a donation of Shs 15 million.

The Sultan of Sokoto Muhammad Abubakar warned leaders against flaunting their personal gains at the expense of service to the people.
