The Government chief whip Ruth Nankabirwa has appealed to schools to impart skills and encourage students to appreciate agriculture since it’s the backbone of Uganda.
Addressing students at St Mary’s High School Mukono in Kalungu district, Nankabirwa noted that students should be allowed to access the school gardens not only as a learning tool but also as one of the ways of providing the school with food.
She said when the school has enough food, it will not feed only the students but also the teachers hence reducing expenses.
She applauded schools which have tried to maintain the school gardens as the good area for students to apply their skills of farming.
She called upon different school to reopen the school gardens more especially those who have abandoned the farming practices.
"It because these schools had abandon the practice, when a talk about this I don’t want to scare girls, I just want expand your opportunities," she said.
She urged the students to always have open minds stating that will to help them to expand their opportunities because they can not determine what they will become in the future if agriculture is neglected.
“Yes you can have science and technology. You can have computers, you can invent many things, but we shall never invent matooke, we shall never invent cassava ,we shall never food," she noted.
She said there are many computers everywhere but priorities should be put in agriculture.
