Interpol seizes counterfeit products

Interpol on Tuesday displayed a number of counterfeit products that it had confiscated from a number of traders in Kampala.

The items intercepted include four tons of fake sachet waragi and 250 cartons of counterfeit cosmetics worth Shs500 million.

The director Interpol Benson Oyo-Nyeko told Journalists: "As you can see from various places, when we took them for testing, we found they were not able meet standards."

Oyo-Nyeko noted that the sellers willingly surrendered their items through agreement and consent.

"We are going to continue with the crackdown to make sure that the population is protected against these substandard items," he said.

These counterfeit products will be taken to Nakasongola for destruction.

"We have agreed that they should be destroyed," he said.

He said they will not only stop on destruction but serious action will be taken against those who will not heed to the directives.

He warned those dealing in counterfeits ( buyers, sellers, importers and dealers) to stop the habit.

"They are highly consumed by our youths which is wrong and they are not only substandard goods but things which are hazardous to their health," he said.
