"Invest in human resource," business experts advise government

Most businesses operations are driven by decisions of owners , with the rest of the employees just on the implementation side.

Such businesses, opines Emmanuel Dei-Tumi, the chief executive officer Human Capital International, cannot last.

Dei-Tumi said poor leadership and management was at the core of business problems.

"Make people feel part of the whole process and part of the business, they need to love their jobs to deliver therefore that calls for good leadership in the company," Dei-Tumi said.

He was speaking at the strategic leadership summit at Sheraton Hotel in Kampala.

He said that only strategic thinkers will be able to take charge and turn things around during times of uncertainties.

Intelligent and skilled workers, he said, need to be carried as assets of the company.

"Value them, pay them well and give them the platform to think not leaving it to the level of the top management," he said.

Msingi Africa CEO Aggie Konde said there is need to leverage on technology for any business to have a competitive edge.

Dr.Joseph Atta-Mensah, the Principal Policy Advisor at the UN Economic Commission in Africa said that although the private sector will drive the face of the economy, government needs to employ the best brains to pass the right policies that will favour growth.

"It's okay if government goes to Makerere and selects the best people and put them in public service these will be able to generate right and favourable policies," he said.

This was the first strategic leadership summit held in Uganda. It was co-sponsored by NBS TV.
