Members of Parliament representing workers together with leaders of the National Organization of Trade Unions (NOTU) have commended parliament for passing the long awaited Minimum Wage Bill 2013.
To the Worker’s representatives, the law will now improve the welfare of the Workers, bring harmony between government, employers and employees.
Parliament on Tuesday passed the long awaited private members Minimum wage bill 2013 that seeks to seeks to improve the welfare of workers, increasing the purchasing power of people among others
In a joint press conference held at Parliament on Wednesday, both workers members of parliament and leaders of NOTU underscored the importance of parliament in passing the bill arguing it will determine the basic starting pay of lower workers.
According to the legislators the bill will see an establishment of the Minimum Wage bill that will have a mandate in determining the starting figure of salary earners per sector.
Any employer who will default paying the employees the recommended starting salary figure will be punished by paying a fine of 10 million shillings or imprisonment of three years or serving both. The Minister will annually be required to announce the starting minimum wage for all workers.
